Valerie, I love what you say in this post. It is rich with truth, the acknowledgment of suffering, and the will to be present to the joys as well as the sorrows. Thank you.
It also reminds me of a poem in the book "Inconsolable Objects" by Nancy Miller Gomez. The poem is entitled "Still."

"lingers longer and longer
in the spaces between each breath,
stepping carefully onto the ledge
of his last thought."
